PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND:

John has over 48 years of experience in the steel industry. He began his career at United States Steel - Central Engineering, designing continuous casting machines and BOF melt shops. From there he worked for Mackintosh Hemphill as an engineer responsible for the design of rotary tube straighteners and rolling mill rolls. In 1975 he went to work for Tippins Incorporated as a Mechanical Engineer – Project Manager.  John advanced through the engineering department to Assistant Chief Engineer, Chief Engineer and Vice President of Engineering. In 1987 he was appointed President and then went on to become the Owner, Chairman, President and CEO where he was responsible for the overall company management, success, and leadership. He holds 24 patents and co-patents for steel production processes and designs. He led the company to become the world’s leader in modern reversing mill technology (Steckel Mills). During Tippins’ ownership in Tuscaloosa Steel he held the position of CEO and Director concurrently with his position as President at Tippins. After 30 years at Tippins, John formed a joint venture, SMS Demag Tippins LLC, where he was the President of the joint venture.
